Red 2 (2013) Review

Verdict: Unexpectedly funny

An action and comedy packed film.

I was not expecting this film to be hilarious and was pleasantly surprised to find myself laughing out a lot. I had not watched the first one and so missed out on the character relations and their background but it was still enjoyable to watch.

I was curious as to why my friend wanted to watch this and then realized that a Korean was in it, Byung-hun Lee as Han. I should have known, the K-wave is taking over the world- not that I’m any better. Anyways Han is employed to catch/kill, Frank (Bruce Willis) and Marvin (John Malkovich). They are on the run from some CIA stuff that was leaked on the internet and with them is Sarah (Mary-Louise Parker), Frank’s girlfriend who is determined not to hide while they go save the world. Victoria (Helen Mirren) is also ordered to catch them, at first I thought she was his mother but then that didn’t seem right because she’s so bad-ass and not that old. Also in this film is Catherine Zeta-Jones as Katja and Neal McDonough as Jack Horton.

The chemistry between Frank and Marvin is really good and together with Sarah, they make a hilarious team. The tension between Frank and Sarah as well, creates a whole lot of opportunities for comedic lines. And what was surprising to me was that this is an action packed film which is usually somewhat serious, but the tone throughout this film was very light-hearted, even during life and death moments. I was just giggling or laughing throughout the film.

However even though it was funny, the story-line was average (wasn’t incredibly predictable but not particularly complex), and sometimes the lines seemed forced out. Also only the chemistry between Frank and Marvin was solid, the chemistry with the other characters didn’t seem quite there.

I give this a 8/10.
